Wayne Memorial Hospital brings stroke education to local elementary schools

Wayne Memorial Hospital (WMH) recently brought an important health lesson to life in classrooms by reading “B.E.F.A.S.T. Be a Superhero”, a children’s book that teaches how to recognize signs and symptoms of a stroke, to elementary students in local school districts. Nurses and emergency professionals from WMH visited first and second grade classrooms to share the warning signs of a stroke in a way that is simple, clear, and memorable… BE FAST.

WMH is a Certified Primary Stroke Center and recognizes the importance of stroke education at every age. While individuals may associate stroke with adults, children can play a powerful role in recognizing symptoms and alerting a trusted adult or calling 911. By introducing the BE FAST acronym (balance, eyes, face, arms, speech and time), in a simple, age-appropriate way, students are learning that quick action can make a life-saving difference for a parent, grandparent, neighbor, or teacher. Building this awareness early helps create a more informed and prepared community for years to come.

“The goal is to plant the seed early by empowering children to recognize when a loved one may be experiencing a medical emergency,” said Carol Kneier, community relations manager. “If children grow up knowing the signs of stroke and the importance of acting fast, that knowledge stays with them. We hope this program inspires the next generation to be confident, informed, and ready to help when it matters most.”

In addition, the readers spoke with students about how to call 911 and clearly communicate their home address to emergency dispatchers. Students were encouraged to talk with a parent or caregiver about posting their home address near the phone or on the refrigerator, ensuring it can be located quickly in an emergency.

With the continued stroke outreach, WMH hopes to further expand stroke awareness throughout the community. Well over 900 elementary students from Forest City, Wallenpaupack, Wayne Highlands, and Western Wayne school districts have participated in the program, helping ensure that the next generation understands the importance of recognizing stroke symptoms and responding without delay.
