Car Seat Safety Check May 27th

(Honesdale, May 16, 2023)…As part of National EMS Week May 21 –27th , 2023 and National EMS for Children Day, Emergency Medical Services of Northeastern Pennsylvania and Wayne Memorial Hospital are hosting a Child Car Seat Safety Check in Honesdale Saturday morning May 27th.. The event will take place in the hospital’s outpatient parking lot at 601 Park Street Honesdale from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will inspect car seats free of charge and demonstrate how to correctly install and use them. Children must be present for car seat check. Important safety information will be available regarding age, height, and weight requirements for car seats and boosters as well as installation and seat expiration dates.

The American Academy of Pediatrics advises parents not to use a car seat past its expiration date. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration requires permanent visible labels that say the car seat is certified and complies with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards or FMVSS 213.

“Studies show that following all safety guidelines for car seats can reduce severe and fatal injuries in children by as much as 80%,” says Wayne Memorial Community Health Manager Carol Kneier  MS, RD, LDN, CDCES, noting that Wayne Memorial Hospital is a Level IV Trauma Center

Pennsylvania law dictates that until the age of 2, children must be in a rear facing car seat until the child outgrows the maximum height and weight constraints designated by the manufacturer. Children ages 4 through 8 must be in an approved booster seat when riding in a vehicle. A limited number of car safety seats will be available for parents or guardians unable to purchase one. All information and services at this event are free of charge.
