FREE Quit Smoking clinic

(Honesdale, January 16, 2020)…Starting February 12 and running weekly through March 25th, a free group clinic will be offered to anyone looking to quit tobacco use. The eight-week program will also provide free nicotine replacement therapy—patches, gum, lozenges – for one month to participants. It’s presented by the PA Area Health Education Center and Wayne Memorial’s Community Relations Department with funding from the American Lung Association.

“A certified facilitator will start by helping you determine if you’re really ready to quit,” said Carol Kneier, MS, RD, LDN, CDE, adding “thousands of Americans have quit and if someone is determined to do it, they can. If you need help, this clinic may be the key.”

The clinic will also examine medications that can increase your success, lifestyle changes to make quitting easier, how to prepare for your “quit day,” coping strategies for managing stress and avoiding weight gain and how to stay smoke-free for good.

Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of death and disease in the United States. The diseases linked to tobacco use are many, including lung cancer, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), esophageal cancer and stroke. According to the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control, in 2018, an estimated 13.7% (34.2 million) of U.S. adults were current cigarette smokers.

The program will be held every Wednesday and one Monday (March 9th)  at 3:45pm at Wayne  Memorial Hospital, 601 Park Street, Honesdale.
