WMH Auxiliary Awards Nursing Scholarships
Hubert had already acquired an Associate’s degree in another field, but nursing “called” to her. “I’m very excited,” said Kendra, “to be pursuing my passion.” Kendra’s $10,802 scholarship will help her complete her studies at Marywood University.
The Lemnitzer scholarship is administered by the Wayne Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and Honesdale National Bank (HNB). Hubert’s mother found the scholarship information on-line, and now, “my mother is ecstatic!” said Kendra.
The hospital Auxiliary also helps distribute scholarships from the Victoria T. Robinson fund. This year, two scholarships of $1,800 each will go to Lauren Ingulli, a 2013 graduate of Wallenpaupack Area High School headed to East Stroudsburg University, and Claudia Alvarez, a 2013 graduate of Delaware Valley High School who plans to study nursing at Penn State/main campus.
The Auxiliary has its own scholarship fund for a second year student in the Luzerne County Community College Nursing Program at Wayne Memorial Hospital. Sarah Tigue will receive $1,000.
Paul Meagher, a local businessman who sits on the Board of Directors at HNB, knew Ernest Lemnitzer personally. “He was a generous man, very community minded,” said Meagher. “We used to walk together. He left money for a lot of places, including a church that he said could continue to have the money as long as they didn’t put vinyl siding up on the old historic walls! He was a character.”
Ernest Lemnitzer was the brother of the late Lyman Lemnitzer, a former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and a Honesdale resident.
Kendra said she is aware that Marywood University recently lost its accreditation from the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and is appealing that decision. The University is also seeking accreditation from another institution. Marywood is still board-certified by the state, however, and its students are able to take the state licensure exams for registered nurses.
