Open to Y members age 18 and older, the Holiday Fitness Challenge lasts the entire month of November.
“It’s an extra incentive to keep people moving during the holiday season, when they tend to slack off,” said Steve Durkin, Executive Director of the Greater Carbondale YMCA.

Each time members work out at either Y, they get a ticket, which is entered into a drawing. Additional tickets can be earned by taking challenges listed on a calendar posted at each Y. The calendar might say, “take a zumba class” or “try out the new rowing machine.” A third way to earn tickets is by attending a special workshop given by Wayne Memorial Hospital on topics such as “Sleep Myths & Facts” or “Holiday Leftovers & Diabetes.” The more tickets you earn, the better your chances of winning the drawing.

Durkin said the idea of daily challenges is to “get people to become all-around Y members instead of just participating in one activity.”

Three people from each YMCA will have their tickets drawn on December 1. The six finalists will then compete in the grand prize drawing for $500. One second place winner will receive $250, one third place winner, $100, and the three remaining people, $50 each.

Durkin said he and Tina Hoehn, Executive Director of the Wayne County YMCA, wanted to hold a fitness challenge but needed a major sponsor. They approached Wayne Memorial, and hospital administrators thought it was a great idea.

“We’re truly about wellness, helping you get well and stay well,” said Lisa Champeau, Public Relations Manager at the hospital.
