(Honesdale, October 26, 2006)…It’s that time of year again, when cold weather forces even the hardiest walkers indoors.  For the seventh consecutive year, area schools will open after hours to allow the public space to walk at their own pace. The In-School Winter Walking Program is a partnership between Wayne Memorial Hospital and Wayne Highlands, Wallenpaupack, and Western Wayne School districts.  The program begins November 1st and runs through March 29th, 2007.  The following schools will be open in the evenings, unless school is not in session that day.

Participating Schools Open 6pm-8pm Monday - Thursday
Damascus Elementary
Lakeside Elementary
Preston Elementary
Wallenpaupack High School
Newfoundland Elementary
RD Wilson Elementary
Western Wayne Middle/High School

For security reasons, walkers must be registered and log in at each school for each visit. Logbooks are kept near entryways or school offices.  To register, call Wayne Memorial Hospital’s Community Relations office at (570) 253-8990.  There is a one-time $5 fee for badge processing and mailings. Each year, returning participants will receive a sticker— such as ‘06’—to place on their badge.  Last year, 578 people were registered for the program.

The In-School Winter Walking Program also includes events, seminars, workshops and presentations on health-related topics throughout the season. With registration, participants will receive news of these events as they are scheduled.
