How about a paw-shake? Molly, a Golden Retriever, is being introduced to Albert Belknapp, a patient at the Good Shepherd-Wayne Memorial Inpatient Rehabilitation Center in Honesdale. Molly is a “pet therapy” pooch who visits the unit every two weeks. Supervising Therapist and Acting Program Manager Heather Larkin, OT, says Molly’s visits offer patients relaxation, socialization with other patients and a gentle pick-me-up. For patients who wish to advance their rehabilitation, walking Molly or throwing a ball to her can also help a patient with balancing and muscle coordination skills. The Good Shepherd-Wayne Memorial unit offers physical and occupational therapy to patients recovering from certain joint replacement operations, other orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions, trauma and other illnesses. Molly’s owner/handler Leslie Dennis (left) says the dog is trained to “offer comfort and bring happiness” to rehab patients. Belknapp, who lives in Honesdale, called Molly “friendly” and noticed she had a very easygoing personality. Looking on is Gladys Ritzler, Honesdale. Molly is certified by Bright & Beautiful Therapy Dogs. For more information about Good Shepherd-Wayne Memorial inpatient programs, call (570) 253-8728.
