(Honesdale, March 7, 2008)…How significant is the diabetes problem in the Wayne Memorial Hospital service area? Consider this: the incidence of diabetes in Wayne and Pike Counties—74/1000 people—is higher than in the entire state of Pennsylvania (72/1000), according to the Pennsylvania Health Department. And the Keystone State’s rate of diabetes, 8.6%, is above the national average of 7%. Left unmanaged, diabetes produces complications—cardiovascular disease, vision problems, non-healing wounds— that send patients to the hospital over and over again.
In short, diabetes in our area and throughout the country is a BIG health problem. That was the title of Dr. Ann Albright’s presentation at WMH on February 21st to more than 110 people in two separate sessions. Ann Albright, RD, PhD, is the Center for Disease Control’s director of the Division of Diabetes Translation (“translating research into action”).
“Roughly 3600 people a day are diagnosed with diabetes in the U.S.,” said Albright. “Of the children born in America in 2000, one in three will develop diabetes in their lifetime if we do not make changes to improve our preven
