Is it clean? You bet! Wayne Memorial Hospital’s Central Services staff, its on-site “sterilization team,” was recognized by the 3M company for going above and beyond standard care. In January the staff began using biological indicators (BI) for every load of utensils and other equipment from the Operating Room, Emergency Department and other areas of the hospital. The BI is a self-contained device that holds live spores which, under proper conditions, are killed during the sterilization process. The staff gets rapid same-day results so the chances of catching and preventing infection are much higher than at many other hospitals, according to Jim Conahan, 3M.
